Tay Gowan walked away from his final season in college because he wanted to defend his young daughter from Covid. So it really wasn’t out of the blue to see him smile and say “I had an amazing time” while recounting his performance in last week’s preseason game against the Cowboys.
“I feel right at home,” said the rookie cornerback. Maybe that’s because the sixth-round pick got busy, with the Cowboys throwing it 5 times in his 34 defensive shots. “I feel like I’m responding well,” Gowan said. “There are things I want to work on. Yeah, they’ve tested me a lot, I think I’ve got like five targets. I think I’m holding my own.”
Pro Football Focus has a score of 50.4 on the sport of Gowan; By way of evaluation, fellow rookie Marco Wilson was 83.7, second on best cover for another cornerback, Byron Murphy. Part of the Gowan conflict will e just to make a list. Wilson has been outstanding, and the Cardinals have had a number of veterans to enjoy.
Darqueze Dennard even failed to play, and there was also Daryl Worley in conjunction with the top three Murphy, Robert Alford and Malcolm Butler.
Gowan insisted he did not consider the status of his list. The roller coaster in which he has taken to get so far – junior college, Central Florida, and then sitting close to the season – made his draft reputation of accomplishment for himself.
When he looked back at the footage, it failed to take away his confidence.
“I became impressed with myself, simply because I haven’t been in this sector for a long time and have actually hit and been active,” Gowan said. “I understand I could put in a better performance and dominate. But since I came out, I think I did pretty well.”
